Feature #3: Injection molding vs. AM
What?
This feature compares the costs between injection molding (IM) and AM processes such as SLS and MJF. Typically, due to higher setup costs in IM, the IM cost per part is higher for small quantities; but then, rapidly decreases once the manufacturing process is up and running as compared to AM. Thus, when visualizing the cost per part curves between those two process groups, we see a break-even point until which AM is economically of interest. This break-even point becomes much higher in cases where a new mold is needed.
Why?
AM use-cases in which a new mold is needed even though the yearly or remaining lifetime quantity is yet low (usually below 1000 pcs per year) have shown considerable AM business potential. Especially for production ramp ups and end-of-life components, a cost comparison tool between AM and IM is essential to optimize manufacturing strategies.
